Choosing a Celebrant

An obligation free interview will help determine if I am THE celebrant for you.

I highly encourage you to meet fellow celebrants, as I truly believe your day should reflect your personalities, and this can only be achieved by someone with whom you feel fully comfortable.

However, you need to ensure you are comparing "apples with apples" and that you don't just judge a celebrant by their rate alone. Budgets are very important, and that's why I offer a flexible rate - according to your ceremony requirements which really can only be ascertained with more details.

As you approach other celebrants, you may wish to have a handful of questions ready, such as:

1. How many weddings do they perform in a day?

I only take one wedding booking a day as I have found this ensures a truly personal touch. Not only can the bride's arrival be delayed, but as seen with one of my couples, the venue time and place had to be changed due to their initial reception centre having a fire a few months before their wedding! Plus, you don't want your celebrant being late for your ceremony or rushing off to the next ceremony, treating you like a number.

2. How "personalised" is the ceremony?

Many celebrants offer you the choice of a few already prepared ceremonies and you just put together the sections you like, thus making it "personal". I give each couple a questionnaire which depicts the couple's history and story they wish to convey to their guests. Often the couple do not want this in the ceremony and as this takes a few hours to create, my rates then reflect this omission. Optional sections of the ceremony are discussed at our initial meeting. I email through suggestions for different sections of the ceremony and the discussion is ongoing, ensuring the ceremony reflects your personalities and requirements.

3. Do they offer an on-site rehearsal?

Some celebrants advise a rehearsal isn't necessary as they have done so many they will guide the couple on the day. This will be the first time you are having the ceremony, so it doesn't matter how many times I have done it before! I offer a rehearsal either at the venue, at the couple's home or my home, depending on the circumstances. The rehearsal gives a good indication of the flow of the ceremony and helps alleviate some of the inevitable nerves.

4. What equipment do you supply?

I have my own public address system with both lapel and hand held microphone (and stand). One couple advised their reception venue was planning to charge an extra $250 for the use of their 'in-house' PA system!

5. What would you normally wear to a ceremony?

At our initial meeting, I work through a detailed form which helps me create your special ceremony. Some of the details discussed are the theme of the wedding, the colour scheme and if there are any colours or styles you would prefer me to wear or avoid. The time of day, venue and weather conditions also influence my wardrobe decisions for your ceremony.
